Chess is played on an eight-by-eight board by two players, white and black, with sixteen pieces each. Each kind of piece moves its own way, and the goal is checkmate: attack the other king so that it has no safe square left. White moves first, and the players take turns.
Many of the chess games here let you play a friend on one device, taking turns at the same screen, nearly all let you play the computer, and a few match you with players online. How does each chess piece move?
The king moves one square in any direction. The queen moves any distance in a straight line or along a diagonal, the rook in straight lines and the bishop along diagonals. The knight jumps in an L shape, two squares one way and one to the side, and the pawn moves forward one square, or two on its first move, and captures diagonally.
Can I play chess with a friend here?
Yes. Many of these games have a two-player mode for two people taking turns on the same screen, and a few can match you with players online.
